{"id":166,"date":"2011-02-07T17:34:04","date_gmt":"2011-02-07T22:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kira-b.com\/sabrwp\/?p=166"},"modified":"2015-01-22T17:38:43","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T22:38:43","slug":"sabr-day-with-the-bob-davids-chapter-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/?p=166","title":{"rendered":"SABR Day with the Bob Davids Chapter 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>On Saturday, January 29, a total of 156 SABR members and friends gathered in Arlington, Virginia for an all-day event headlining Nationals Park architect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshallpurnell.org\/\">Marshall Purnel<\/a>l and <i>New York Times<\/i> best-selling author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janeleavy.com\/bio\">Jane Leavy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kira-b.com\/sabrwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Marshall-Purnell-DC-meeting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-169 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kira-b.com\/sabrwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Marshall-Purnell-DC-meeting-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"Marshall Purnell DC meeting\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Marshall-Purnell-DC-meeting-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Marshall-Purnell-DC-meeting-932x1024.jpg 932w, https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Marshall-Purnell-DC-meeting.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marshall Purnell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Purnell, partner of the firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dp-architects.com\/\">Devrouax + Purnell<\/a>, brought early drawings of the ballpark project and discussed some of the events that changed that design into what was unveiled in 2008.\u00a0He was entertaining in his views of the political process as well as the give-and-take required to complete a $611 million project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Leavy discussed her new book, <em>The\u00a0The Last Boy, Mickey Mantle and the End of America&#8217;s Childhood<\/em>, along with SABR member and physicist <a href=\"http:\/\/webusers.npl.illinois.edu\/~a-nathan\/\">Alan Nathan<\/a>.\u00a0They showed the results of their research into the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2KERPNCkMC8C&amp;pg=PA100&amp;lpg=PA100&amp;dq=%22alan+nathan%22+%22Mickey+Mantle%22+Stobbs&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=jZqDTH5lGN&amp;sig=IFtuBllMnP5fMAMGZt_QBIopPkI&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=59JOTejHEMH78Abh5dnBDg&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBMQ6AEwAA\">Mickey Mantle home run<\/a> hit out of Griffith Stadium in 1953 off Chuck Stobbs.\u00a0Leavy, a member of our chapter, conducted many interviews, including talking the man who found the ball as a youngster in his neighborhood.\u00a0Nathan used a scientific approach to determine how far that ball actually travelled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kira-b.com\/sabrwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jane-Leavy-DC-meeting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-170 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kira-b.com\/sabrwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jane-Leavy-DC-meeting-300x285.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Leavy DC meeting\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jane-Leavy-DC-meeting-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jane-Leavy-DC-meeting-1024x971.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sabrdavids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jane-Leavy-DC-meeting.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jane Leavy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No less entertaining were the four local SABR members who made presentations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabr.org\/sabr.cfm?a=cms,c,1515,35,0\">David Vincent<\/a>, chapter Board member and long-time MC of our events, presented the interesting complexities of major league umpire travel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabr.org\/sabr.cfm?a=cms,c,2393,35,0\">David Smith<\/a>, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retrosheet\">Retrosheet<\/a> (Unusual data requests from the baseball media in 2010; and<\/li>\n<li>Mark Pankin, a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/retrosheet.org\">Retrosheet<\/a> team, discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retrosheet.org\/Regional%20Series\/\">Regional Postseason Series 1905-42<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itc.csmd.edu\/bus\/rexb\/index.htm\">Professor Rex Bishop<\/a> made a compelling case for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoydu01.shtml\">Dummy Hoy<\/a> being admitted to the Hall of Fame.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/video.yahoo.com\/watch\/647807\/3017113\">Hoy<\/a> set rookie records without benefit of a fielder\u2019s glove or the benefit of hearing the fans cheering.\u00a0Rex\u2019s family is from the Hoy\u2019s hometown of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hancock_County,_Ohio\">Houcktown, OH<\/a>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in .5in .0001pt .5in;\"><\/div>\n<div>The current slate of chapter officer up for election were all re-elected by acclamation:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211; David Raglin as Vice-President<\/div>\n<div>&#8211; David Paulson as Treasurer<\/div>\n<div>&#8211; Barry Sparks as Board member at large<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>(The chapter has placed no restriction on the number of Davids who can hold office simultaneously.)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A <a href=\"http:\/\/horsehidetrivia.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/january-29-2011-sabr-day-in-america-and.html\">baseball trivia quiz<\/a> composed by trivia maven T.
